Convert H265 to MP4
Convert online and free H265 to MP4
Converting in only three steps
Files with the extension .h265 or .265 contain a RAW H.265/HEVC video stream without a container. This means that although the video data is compressed, it lacks an encapsulating format such as MP4, which carries metadata such as frame rate, resolution, timestamps or audio tracks. Without this container, most players and editing programmes cannot handle the file.
With File-Converter-Online.com, these files can easily be made playable. The video stream is automatically analysed and embedded into a suitable MP4 container, so that after conversion from H265 to MP4, a universally playable file is created.
Common sources of H265 files – why convert?
- Drone records in .H265: cannot be played
- Surveillance cameras save in .H265 files
The most common source is modern surveillance cameras and NVR systems (Network Video Recorders). Manufacturers such as Hikvision, Dahua, Reolink, Amcrest and Lorex use H.265 compression as standard for 4K cameras. Many of these devices save recordings as raw video streams directly to the SD card or export .H.265 files that cannot be played back without further processing.
What is the difference between H.264 and H.265?
H.265, also known as HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding), is the successor to H.264/AVC. For the same image quality, H.265 requires only about half the file size. This is achieved through larger and more flexible processing blocks (so-called Coding Tree Units of up to 64×64 pixels instead of the 16×16 macroblocks used in H.264) and significantly more prediction modes. H.265 supports resolutions up to 8K UHD, making it the standard for high-resolution surveillance, streaming and video production. The downside: decoding is more computationally intensive, and browser support is more limited than with H.264.
Why do cameras store raw H.265 streams?
As with H.264 files, the same applies here: in the event of a sudden power cut, an MP4 file may become unreadable because the MOOV atom (the central index) has not yet been written. A raw H.265 stream, on the other hand, is readable frame by frame thanks to unique start codes (00 00 00 01) and can be largely recovered even after an interruption. For continuous recording and budget cameras without much processing power, the raw stream is therefore the more robust option.
Conversion with File-Converter-Online.com
When converting H.265 to MP4, the video stream is analysed and optimised for maximum compatibility. The resulting MP4 file can be played on virtually any player, editing programme and device. Even damaged streams can often be repaired, as File-Converter-Online.com fills in missing header information and automatically skips defective sections.
